On today’s post I want to come with a mixed “marketing” and “technology” topic. Data virtualization, now that’s a topic. Virtualization in itself is a cool world. People in tech love it… so do Engineers. Take a look on what Wiki has to say about Virtualization. There is a separate but related topic, Data virtualization. According to Wiki,
Data virtualization is the process of abstracting, transforming, federating and delivering data contained within a variety of information sources so that they may be accessed by consuming application or users when requested without regard to their physical storage or heterogeneous structure.
I was recently reading a SYSCon media article, Why Do We Call It Data Virtualization? Robert Eve of Composite Software talks about trends among multiple companies switching to “data virtualization”. He mentioned multiple names that have been probably used for similar things over the past years:
· Federated Query
· Enterprise Information Integration (EII)
· Data Federation
· Data Abstraction
· Data Services
· Information-as-a-Service
You can catch more articles here.
What is inforbix’s take? I’m trying to stay away from marketing and buzz words as much as possible and talk to customers. Inforbix is processing data coming from multiple data sources, files, etc. and helps engineers and other people in an organization to access data in a very intuitive way. I can say we create a “virtual access layer”… hmmmm, sounds like techie language
.
However, we understand language is important too. To best be able to explain to our customers what we do, we are constantly looking out for better ways to name, call and present our product and technology. Should we now call what Inforbix does “Product data Virtualization”? I’m not sure… Nevertheless, I’m open to a conversation. Speak your mind!
Best, Oleg
